Senator Nancy Sullivan (D-York County) has submitted legislation to
the Maine Senate to help combat postpartum depression. LD 792 will
require information and education on postpartum mental health issues
to be provided to pregnant women and mothers during the first year
after the baby's birth. It also requires health care providers to
screen mothers for postpartum issues for the first year after
birth. Information on postpartum depression will also be provided
to fathers, spouses, and/or partners and family members. The
legislation is modeled after similar legislation enacted in Illinois
and New Jersey. Currently it does not have any fiscal impact.
